Gold is rarely found in pure 24k state. It is generally associated with silver and often with mercury. Gold in a pure state is very malleable and can be hammered into very thin sheets. If the silver content is more in gold mass, naturally it’s called electrum. It is only visible in a highly polished surface or can be viewed through a microscope.
Gold is a metal which is not affected by any gases in atmosphere, even by oxygen. That’s why it doesn’t get tarnished. Tarnishing is the result of the reaction of metal to oxygen. Gold is very malleable, it is flexible to the point that it can be hammered into a leaf or sheet of foil 3/1,000,000 inch thick (0.000003 inches) on an area around 6 square feet. The thin sheet is semi-transparent and transmits a greenish light through the leaf.
Since gold is too soft, it is made into alloy in order to make jewelry. Gold alloy has less ductility but its malleability remains constant. But, when high percentages of copper are added to the alloy, it is perfect for jewelry making. For white gold alloys, nickel is the one mixed into it. Zinc is also added and it lightens the color. The zinc is used in gold alloys to absorb the oxygen and prevent silver and copper oxidation.
