The History Behind the Evolution of the Fountain Pens
Even in the earliest ages of human civilization, mankind had the urge to preserve thoughts by crystallising them into words that they placed on the surface of objects. Over a long period of time we developed various implements like sharp stones, reeds, metals and then quills to write and draw on the outer layer of stone, pots, plates, palm leaves or skins that even after many generations have come and gone, have still kept those thoughts alive for archaeologists to reveal and for others to share in.
After the invention of ink and paper the whole mode of writing became easier and more widespread. The first prototype of fountain pens was the quill pen. Writers had to live with the problem that quills require constant dipping in a reservoir of ink and this made the process tiring and messy for long hours of writing. Quill Pens were improved when their makers noticed that bird feathers have a hollow channel which can store ink for writing if they are shaped properly.
The first trace of fountain pens dates back to the 10th century. The story goes that the Caliph of Egypt was very frustrated by quills as they left ink stains everywhere and his scribes were always making a mess wherever they went. He demanded the creation of a writing instrument which would not cause ink stains on hands or cloth and could be carried without untidiness.
This provoked the creation of the first fountain pen model that could be used with a changeable ink cartridge. Progress was slow in developing a reliable fountain pen, until the mid-19th century. Inventors from across the world worked on three key ideas – free-flowing ink, an iridium-tipped gold nib and hard rubber ink containers, before fountain pens reached a stage where they could be mass produced and sold everywhere.
The major breakthrough came in 1884 by Lewis Waterman. After years of numerous experiments, modifications, testing and fixing fountain pens’ problems, he developed the “Three Fissure Feed”, a structure based on the principle of capillary attraction. He patented his creation and made the idea of portable fountain pens a reality.
These days, fountain pens are still favoured by many for their elegance and easy use as well as remaining a highly collectable item. Fountain pens are made from a variety of different materials like plastic, wood, leather, gemstones, silver or gold, and are available in nine nib sizes to accomplish variety of writing styles like straight, italic, oblique or to practice the art of calligraphy. It’s easy to refill a fountain pen with an ink cartridge or from bottled ink.
