Golden Retriever Facts And Information
Who owns a Golden Retriever?
I have a 9 week old puppy and I am looking for any information from people who have owned Goldens, know of others who have owned them, or just know some facts about them. I am looking for anything from maintaining a healthy coat, to food, to training, to health…anything! Thank you!
Food and grooming will help with a healthy coat. My dogs have never looked or felt better than they have on California Naturals food. Goldens are prone to allergies (which is why I feed the Cal. Nat.-one of them has terrible allergies), and this food is pretty hypoallergenic. For coat care, I use a #12 Mars Coat King every few weeks (it removes the undercoat, and can thin the coat a little) and for daily (and I mean daily) grooming, a pin brush, slicker brush, and a comb with rotating teeth will do the job. They’re easy to train-buy a good book or contact a local trainer for advice. They do need LOTS of exercise (especially the first 2-3 years) and they are very rambunctious and mouthy their first few years. Keep a close eye on the dog, because they WILL chew, and as soon as you think it’s over (around 9 months), another chewing phase will start. The only preventative for the bad behavior of puppies is keeping a very close eye on the puppy, providing LOTS of exercise and play, and having lots of appropriate chew toys available. I like the wolf-size “souper” bone and the “gallileo” bones from Nylabone (toss them when they show signs of wear!).
