The Popular Use Of Rhodium
Jewelry has always been popular with women. Whether they like gold or silver, there has always been a great selection available, in all different price ranges. Jewelry, whether it is new or antique, always holds a special place for women and is always a staple in gift giving. It is also something used to pass along to other generations as a remembrance.
For quite a long time, silver has found it’s way into a woman’s jewelry box. Some of its popularity comes from the lower price than gold. People don’t always realize that silver toned jewelry is not always made from silver. There are often many other metals used in place or in addition to silver. Many times, silver toned jewelry is made from more expensive metals such as white gold, platinum and rhodium.
In fact, rhodium is used to plate many other metals, silver included. Rhodium earrings may actually be silver earrings coated in rhodium to keep them from tarnishing. Silver tends to age and tarnish rather quickly if not polished. However, rhodium is a stronger metal that does not tarnish so easily.
Many companies have moved to using rhodium as a plate to the metal pieces they use on their accessories such as hobo handbags. These metal pieces are less prone to corrosion because rhodium has a high corrosion resistance. High end handbags are readily using this product to keep their metal embellishments more brilliant.
It has many other uses as well. Many electrical contacts are made with rhodium because it has a low resistance to electricity. Optical equipment is also plated with the metal and the filters of mammography systems are made from it. High quality writing pens and even the catalytic converter on your cars exhaust system is made from the metal.
Rhodium is unusual because not only is it mined and extracted from other ores found like gold, platinum and silver, it is also possible to extract rhodium from used nuclear fuel. This metal is found in the periodic table under transition metals and is symbolized by Rh.
While many people prefer the look of silver, it isn’t as widely used as you may believe. Silver toned jewelry however, is very popular, mainly because it looks great with just about everything. Gold can look plain and boring, but striking silver toned pieces seem to add a brilliance to any outfit, whether it is girls shirts and jeans or a cute little black dress and heels.
