Decorating Your Apartment Walls
So your new apartment is shaping up pretty well …boxes unpacked, furniture assembled, fresh coat of paint covering the walls…but it’s those darn walls that just don’t seem quite right. Sure, that shade of green perfectly complements your new sofa, but the overall effect still feels, well, a little sparse. So what to do?
One of the biggest mistakes people make when decorating the walls of their new apartment is to try and cram too much into too little. Just because you have every Friday the 13th poster they’ve come out with since the series’ inception doesn’t mean you need to try and cover every square inch of living room wall space with hockey masks and carnage; try putting the original classic poster in a real-deal frame and place prominently instead. Add some accent lighting for a really dramatic effect, and you’ll have an instant conversation starter.
Speaking of movies, theme rooms are a great way to spruce up your wall space. If you’re into sports, why not toss up some team pennants? Neat collectibles like Frisbees, beer cans or even license plates can instantly transform your room from ordinary to one-of-a-kind. And don’t dismiss the power of a library to impress – toss up come strong shelves and line the walls with your favorite books, ensuring they’ll always be within reach and prominently displayed.
Sometimes your painting itself can become wall art. Try adding textures for an eye-catching effect, or create your own colorful illusion by painting a wall in black-and-white checks. Wallpaper accent borders can also add an interesting contrast, just be sure to check with your apartment community manager before applying wallpaper or risk losing some of your security deposit down the road.
Your apartment walls are easily some of the most prominent features of your new home, so don’t overlook the decorative opportunities they offer. Remember, you home is what you make it, so why not make it spectacular!
