Black Canary
my canary has a black spot above his eye. Is this an indication of something wrong? He acts normal and healthy?
The blackness is more like a bruise under the feathers and it doesn’t look like dirt. He is bright orange.
Canaries in the wild are dull little birds. Their feather color is made up of black, brown, yellow all mixed into a blend of blah. For every 50,000 canaries hatched annually, there are mutations. These mutations can be developed into types, such as frilly feathers, lizard markings, coronas, body structure variations, and color. Your bird is a “red factor” gained from introducing a Red Siskin into the breeding. It has become a genetic factor and will carry through the generations, however it requires color agents in the food to maintain vivid colors. I wouldn’t be concerned unless the spot has suddenly developed, then you should seek out an avian vet or look for local bird clubs/breeders for direct advice. Since there is no swelling, perhaps its just a pigmented spot on his skin. Good luck.
