How to wire a light switch with 2 positive and 2 neg leads from house?
I bought a replacement light fixture to replace the one that was there. This light is wired to a switch in the wall. The box in the ceiling has 2 sets of wires coming out of it, meaning 2 black, 2 white and 2 green. The fixture I have also has 2 black and two white wires. I tried hooking up one black from the fixture to one of the black wires in the house and the same with the white. Then I repeated with the other set of wires from the fixture and house, but only one bulb turns on and it wont shut off regardless of the position of the wall switch. What am I doing wrong?
this is what i think you have. in the ceiling box, one set of wires are you power source, the other are the switch leg. 1st. open the switch box, is there just 1 black, 1 white & 1 green?. next you need to find witch wire in the ceil box is the power side, tie the black “power” wire to the white “switch leg” wire and wire nut them, this takes power to the switch, next, connect the other white wire in ceiling to both white wires on the fixture, your almost there, now connect the other black wire to both black wires on the fixture. got it? ok, turn power on, unless you were brave & did this hot, turn the switch “on” you should have light. attach the fixture to the ceiling box your done. good luck. you really should turn the circuit breaker off before connecting wires, it may only be 110volts but it still hurts toget shocked.
